Vienna’s Karlsplatz has been under construction for decades and it remains to be seen if it will ever be finished. The most important aspect of this continuous making and remaking of the large and centrally located square is that it clearly demonstrates the dynamics of urban contemporaneity. Karlsplatz tells a rich and conflicted history that is written in the language of architecture and urbanism.
